Storage Virtualization - Unveiling the magic that happens in cloud storage!

Okay....you have created a virtual machine and in the process, it might have asked you about something ... something about virtual hard disk... Ah... yeah....that's the way virtual machines store stuff and things inside. But really beneath the ground, what happens? Yeah...let's dive in and learn about "Storage Virtualization"! You might ask me, "Hey, are they storing stuff up in the air coz' you're saying (quoting in the air) virtualized ? " Actually, still virtual machines running in the cloud servers do use physical storage media such as hard drives, solid state drives (SSDs), etc. to store but the complex I/O operation is just abstracted away! Wait, there are some types of storage virtualization ... let's see what they are! 1) Block level  Here, similar to our computers, servers running the virtual machines just write stuff directly onto your physical storage media. 2) Object-level In here, data isn’t stored on your disk directly. Instead, it...

So, you have made your decision to learn cloud ! One of the best decision, I would say in this current world of rapidly growing field of information technology. To learn cloud, you need to get your hands dirty. Now let's get our hands dirty. First, you need to create your AWS Educate account which allows you to learn a ton of cloud related stuff. To do that, go to AWS Educate  website.   From there, click on the "Register now" button which will take you to the page where you'll fill in your details. Voila...you have your AWS Educate created ..its that simple. Now, it's your turn...try it on your own!

Migrating a VM to another VM environment

This is one important thing you gotta know coz' you would end up doing many times in whatever cloud environment you go for. So, first let's learn how to do Virtual-2-Virtual migration on a hypervisor running on your local machine. As I said in the previous post, I'm going with Oracle VirtualBox. You can use that for your needs too. First off , select the VM that you wanna export and Right Click on it. Then choose the Export to OCI option.      Then, choose the location where you wanna export the VM to. Remember, the VM would be as a OVA (Open Virtualization Appliance) and not as a VMDK or any other virtual hard disk file. If you know wanna more about OVA and OVF, follow the below link.                                                      This step is optional where you can type in the description, product URL and stuff for the VM that you ...

My First Virtual Machine

Before diving into cloud, you gotta experience virtual machines and stuff first hand on your local machine. So to do that,  First, we are gonna install a Type 2 Hypervisor such as VMWare Workstation Player, VMWare Workstation or the very famous one Oracle VirtualBox. In our case, we are gonna use the latter one. Once you have downloaded the installer file and installed it on your machine, you'd find yourself on the dashboard which would look something like this  From here, click on New by which you are gonna create a new virtual machine  (P.S gonna use VM further coz' typing "virtual machine" again and again can make this post weird!)  Then, it shows you the VM creation window. Its pretty self-explanatory where you'd give your VM a name, set the memory size and etc. Now, it asks you to choose the type of virtual hard drive that you are gonna use and its size. Virtual Hard disk Types  --> Learn about the types here!  You have created your empty VM s...
